Irys Butterfly Art

My name is Baron Neal

We create butterfly art collages, which are made from butterfly wings. The butterfly wings are collected from several butterfly farms in the country after they die of natural causes. My brother Rudy Neal came up with the idea to make artwork from butterfly wings in 2004. His first job was at a butterfly farm, and he used to breed several species. As part of the job, he had to collect the dead ones to get them out of the cage, but he observed that he was throwing away the beautiful butterfly, and that's when the idea came up to use the wings to make butterfly art collages. He made a few and then taught me the handicraft of making butterfly art collages. We were the only two people in the country who had made butterfly art colleges. After seven years of working together, due to him being a tour guide and being very busy, I took over the business. I then taught seven other people how to do the artwork.

An interesting thing about the artwork is, that because we use two pieces of clear glass, the art has 2 sides to it, if you turn around the butterfly art collages it will be a different color and pattern, so you can appreciate both sides. This is because a butterfly wing has two sides, you see on one side you have a bright color and pattern, but then on the underside, there is a different color and pattern. This artwork will last more than 35 years, because we preserve the butterfly wings with alcohol and mothballs, and we place the art between two pieces of glass and glue the two glasses with silicone so air nor water can get in it, and then we frame it. The frames are locally made by Mahogany from Belize.
